National Intangible Cultural Heritage
Intangible cultural heritage is very different from historical sites and artefacts as it has no physical form. According to the Korea Heritage Service (KHS), South Korea has two different levels of intangible cultural heritage: national intangible cultural heritage and city/province intangible cultural heritage. Korea Uncovered will focus on nationally important intangible cultural heritage, whilst the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage page will expand further on national intangible cultural heritage that is UNESCO listed. As of April 2026, 160 items have been designated as national intangible cultural heritage. For ease of viewing, these have been separated into five broad topics: artisanship, the arts, festivals and holidays, practices and rituals.
